Learning to shift gears correctly is an important part of mastering your bike and cycling style.
It doesn't matter what type of bike you ride, you’ll have gears. They are essential mechanical pieces that will allow you a smooth, fast, and fun ride.
These top tips will get you to get a grip on how to shift gears correctly!
1. Get to know your bike
Get plenty of practice on your bike. Learn what it feels like when the gears change and spend some time in the gears. Your relationship with the bike will allow you to "feel" and learn better than any explanation could.
2. Right = Rear, Left = Front
3. Left = big changes, Right = fine-tuning
4. Don't back-pedal while shifting. Pedal lightly while using the shifter.
5. Pedal at a comfortable cadence.
If you’re pedaling too fast, and there isn’t enough resistance, it's time to shift into a harder gear. The resistance can also create speed!
If you’re pedaling too slow, and it’s difficult to turn over the pedals, shift into an easier gear. Find a cadence that feels comfortable to you.
6. Prepare for hills.
To approach a hill, shift down using the left shifter (for front gears) to an easier gear. Fine-tune your resistance and speed using the rear gears.
The best way to learn is to get on the bike. Happy shifting!
